Charles James Watts was one of 14 children of William and Mary Jane Watts. His birth index only gives the name James and throughout his life his name is shown as James, James Charles or Charles James. He was born in 1875 in Aldershot and his birth is recorded on the GRO Army birth index. His father was in the 15th Regiment of the Northumberland Hussars. The family were living in Beverley in 1881, when his father was stationed at Victoria Barracks. His father later became a tanner's labourer as did Charles James. Charles James married Rosa Butters in Jun 1903 at Beverley Minster, they had two children before 1911. He joined the East Yorkshire Regiment as a private and was an officer's servant in Belgium when he was killed by in an explosion caused by a trench mortar on 27 Feb 1916. A newspaper article about his death states he was an army volunteer before the war. He is remembered with honour at Maple Copse Cemetery.
