Edmund Royston Walker was born on the 22 Nov 1893 in Beverley and was baptised 16 Dec 1893 at St Mary’s church Beverley. He was one of five children of John William and Agnes Walker (nee Holtby). John William was a worker in the whiting works. In 1911 the family were living in Holme Church Lane, Beverley and Edmund was a cooper’s labourer.

Edmund enlisted with the East Yorkshire regiment on 11 Dec 1915 at Beverley and served with the 11th Battalion until the 23 Sep 1916 when he was transferred to the 9th Battalion of the Yorks. and Lancs. regiment. Edmund served in France from 1916 and on 23 Sep 1917 was mortally wounded in the battle of Menin Road. He was buried in Bedhouse Cemetery, Belgium.

Edmund was awarded the British and victory medals. A letter from his captain in Aug 1917 said ‘I can only trust that in your sorrow you may find some consolation in the fact that he died a gallant soldier, fighting for King and country, mourned after and regretted by his comrades.’
