Harry was born in the Shiptonthorpe area in Apr 1878 and he was baptised at Everingham Parish Church on 19 May 1878, the son of George Winter and Harriett (nee Mowthorp). George was a farm labourer but the family moved into Beverley in the mid-1880s and he became a tanner's labourer. Harry was brought up in Mill Lane, Beverley. In 1901 he was a lodger in Hull working as a labourer at a paint works. On 27 Dec 1902 he married Ada May Bloomfield at Beverley Minster. They moved to Hull where Harry worked as a labourer/fitter in an oil mill. They lived in Exmouth Street, Ada died in 1912 aged 34.
Harry served in the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment and reaching the rank of Sergeant. He arrived in France on 21 Nov 1915. The 2nd spent the entire war in France and Belgium. On 6 Nov 1918 Harry was killed in action. The war was nearly at an end but the allied offensive was being furiously resisted by the retreating German army. He is buried at Bettrechies Communal Cemetery in the area between Valenciennes and Mauberge. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals as well as the 1915 Star. He is also commemorated on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster.
Two of Harry's brothers also died in France in 1918. Clarence Winter died as a POW in Aug/Sep and Victor Winter of the RFA, died of gas poisoning on 17 Sep.
