Wilfred was born in Upper Poppleton near York on 3 Mar 1892 and baptised at the local parish church on 28 Mar 1892 the son of Edwin Walker, born in Hunslet, Leeds, in 1871, and Elizabeth (nee Marsh) born in Poppleton in 1873. They lived on village Street, Bishopthorpe near York. Wilfred married Frances Eleanor Batty, born in Beverley on 16 Jan 1890, in York in 1915. The couple’s first child, Kenneth Edwin, was born in Beverley in on 14 Oct 1916 and baptised at Beverley Minster on 4 Nov 1916.
Wilfred served in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby), gaining the rank of Corporal. He was badly wounded and taken off frontline duties to become a Corporal in the Army Labour Corps. He left the army in Jan 1919 and was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
The family returned to York and another child, Kathleen, was born in 1924. Wilfred worked in York as a wood machinist with the Railway Engine and Maintenance and Repair staff, he was a member of the St John’s Ambulance in Second World War. He was living at 37 Hanover Street, York at the time of his death on 31 Oct 1953 aged 60.
