Fred Whitaker, the son of William Whitaker, a printer and Fanny Taylor Best, was born in Beverley in 1895. Most of the Whitaker family lived as boarders with the Johnson family at the time of the 1901 and 1911 census. In 1911 they were living at 7, Eastbourne Villas, Grovehill Road, Fred was working as a baker's boy. His brother Harry lived in Beverley with his paternal grandparents, Leonard and Emma Whitaker. Fanny Whitaker was not recorded as living at the same address as her family on either the 1901 or 1911 census returns.
Fred joined the Army serving with the Army Service Corps, at a Horse Transport depot with the rank of driver. His brother Harry served with the Yorkshire Regiment and died from wounds received in 1918.
Fred died in 1972 aged 77.
