John William Wilson was born in Catwick in 1893, the son of John and Martha Jane Wilson (nee Witty). By 1901 the family was living in Pape's Yard, Keldgate, Beverley where John was a boot and shoemaker, a profession he carried on when the family moved to 10 St Andrew Street.
John William was a labourer at the whitening works when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment as private 24679 on 5 Jun 1916. On 9 Nov 1916 he was transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment and then attached to the 9th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment on 10 Mar 1919. On 25 Feb 1918, John William was wounded. He was demobbed on 22 Nov 1919, at which time his occupation was given as engine driver. John William Wilson was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
John married Margaret E Gray in 1924 and in 1939 they were living on Queensgate, Beverley and John was employed at the whiting works. He died in 1987 aged 94 . Includes photograph, information taken from census, military records, Commonwealth War Graves, newspapers |
