Thomas Hartley Uncles, the son of William Jeremiah Uncles and Sarah Hannah (nee Masterman), was born in South Shields in 1885. In 1911 he was living with his parents at 6 St John Street, Beverley and was a surveyor's assistant for the East Riding County Council.

In 1918 he was Private of the Royal Army Medical Corp, attached to the Royal Field Artillery. On 6 Aug 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal. He was also awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

In 1921, he married Dorothy Marion Dowson in Driffield and they had a daughter, Marion Shirley born 1926.

During the Second World War Thomas was part of the local decontamination squad and light rescue party and was a divisional highways surveyor.

He passed away suddenly in 1942, aged 56.
