Alfred Thackerywas born in Beverley in c1897, the son of Edward and Fanny. Edward was a lbaourer and the fmaily lived in Sparkmill Terrace, moving by 1911 to be a lodging house proprietor in Flemingate.
Alfred’ surname was spelt Thackwray in 1901, The 1911 census records the family as Thackary, as does the Beverley Guardian report of his death in 1916 but on his war records he is called Thackery

Alfred enlisted in Beverley and joined many more East Riding men in the Battles of the Somme. He was killed in action on 17 Sep 1916 probably at the battle of Flers-Courcelette. The Beverley Guardian reported his death on 30 Sep 1916. ‘Pte A Thackary 2nd son of Mr and Mrs Thackary of 68 St Andrew Street Beverley was killed in action on 15th September. The parents have received a letter from his platoon Commander expressing sympathy and paying tribute to the soldierly qualities of the deceased’.

Alfred is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France, the Beverley War Memorial in Hengate and the East Riding Memorial in the Beverley Minster.
