Arthur James Turner was born the 3 Mar 1897 at Bogle Lane, Beverley (noow Beaver Road), the son of Arthur James Turner, a tanner’s labourer, and Kate Beck. Arthur senior was born in Ipswich and his mother (sometimes known as Kathleen or Catherine) came from Belfast. On leaving school Arthur worked as a milk delivery boy and by 1914 he was employed in a local shipyard. In Aug 1912, Arthur joined the Beverley Company, Church Lads' Brigade and was a member of for the next eighteen months. The Church Lads' Brigade Roll Book notes he enlisted in the 'Terriers' in Mar 1914.

On reaching his nineteenth birthday in 1916, Arthur became eligible for military service overseas. Shortly afterwards, Trooper Arthur J Turner of the 1st/1st East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry embarked for the Egypt/Palestine theatre to join his unit, which had been serving there since 1915. The East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry, 22nd Mounted Mounted Brigade, was part of the Western Frontier Force. They saw action in the Battles of Gaza in 1917 and were in the great cavalry charge at El Mughar in Oct 1917. Arthur was allocated a new regimental number and promoted to Acting Corporal. In Apr 1918, the Yorkshire Yeomanry amalgamated with the Lincolnshire Yeomanry to become 'D' Machine Gun Battalion and moved to France, where the Battalion formed part of 102nd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. Arthur served in France until after the Armistice. He was disembodied on 21 Feb 1919 and returned safely home to Yorkshire.

Arthur married Rose Annie Casper at Fulford, York, on 17 Apr 1922. They had three children, Kenneth James born 1931, Ronald Douglas born 1932, and Maurice Arthur born 1933. In 1939, Arthur, Rose, and their three children, lived at 34 Maple Grove, Fulford, York. Arthur was employed as a painter. Arthur died in York in 1978, aged 81.
