Alfred was born in May 1883, in Lund, the son of William and Mary Teal. William was the local blacksmith. In 1911 the family was living in Sigglesthorne and Alfred was working as a farm labourer.

Alfred Teal joined the Coldstream Guards in March 1902, aged 18 years and 10 months, as a Private. He served in the Guards for 12 years, as a machine gunner, (8 years in the Army and 4 years in the Army reserve), before being discharged in Mar 1914.

Alfred re-enlisted, aged 32, in the 3rd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards in Feb 1916, as a machine gunner. His civilian career at that time was as a shepherd. Alfred embarked for France on 26 Aug 1916, rejoining his battalion in Sep 1916. He was wounded on 12 Apr 1918 and taken prisoner in the German Spring Offensive of 1918. He was held as a prisoner of war in Dulmen POW camp, until his release 22 Nov 1918. He arrived safely back in Hull on 15 Dec 1918, leaving the army in Aug 1919. He was awarded both the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Alfred returned to civilian life, living in Etton, he married Dora Norman on 21 Jun 1930 in Etton and they had 3 children. In 1939 he was working as a general labourer. Alfred died in 1971, his wife Dora, in 1972.
