Harry was born in the Wakefield area on 10 Nov 1888, the son of Thomas Tempest and Rachel Ann (nee Baxter). Thomas moved the family to Beverley after the birth of Harry and became a publican, running The Angel, Butcher Row. Harry was baptised at Beverley Minster on 29 Aug 1893 along with his sister Annie born in 1884. Harry was privately educated.
Harry joined the Royal Navy in 1908, signing on for 12 years’ service. He served as a leading stoker. He spent 1908-11 on the cruiser HMS Amethyst and was on HMS Hercules from 1913-19. She was a 20000 ton Dreadnought battleship launched in 1910. She spent the war in the Home and Grand Fleets and was at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 and took part in the inconclusive action in the North Sea on 19 Aug 1916. Harry was awarded the War and Victory Medals as well as the 1914-15 Star.
Harry lived in the Hunslet, Leeds, he married Nellie Vaughan in 1923, they had a son, Rowland. Harry died aged 67 in 1955. Includes photograph, information taken from census, military records, Commonwealth War Graves, newspapers |
