Stanley Turner was born the 24 Aug 1894, the son of John William Turner, joiner and Ann, they lived at 103 Grovehill Road. By 1911 Stanley was working as a tinner and gas fitter apprentice at a local ironmongers, he later qualified as a plumber.

Stanley served in the Royal Navy, on 10 Mar 1916 he joined the Royal Navy Voluntary Reserve and the Royal Navy proper on 12 Dec 1916. He served as a plumber at HMS Victory (Portsmouth) and later from 24 Mar 1917 to 16 Oct 1918 at HMS Fisgard in West Wales. It is not known whether he simply worked at the naval bases or whether he worked on ships docked at the bases. He left the navy on 14 Feb 1919. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Stanley returned to Beverley and worked as a plumber. In 1925 he married Florence A Pearson in Pocklington, they lived In St Mary’s Terrace, Beverley.

Stanley died in Jun 1977 aged 83. He was buried in Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley on 27 Jun 1977. Stanley is commemorated on the Grovehill Street Shrine in Chantry Lane.
