Harry Turnbull was born in beverley the 22 Sep 1897 the son of Arthur, a miller, and Annie Elizabeth (nee Johnson), they married at St Nicholas, Beverley in 1892 but their 4 children were baptized within the Methodist church. The family lived on Groveill Road, Beverley.

Harry was 17 when war broke out, he enlisted towards the end of 1915 with the Royal Garrison Artillery when Hull mayor, Alderman Hargreaves, appealed for local men to form a 3rd Hull Battery. They became known as 146 (Hull) Heavy Battery and after training on Salisbury Plain and taking delivery of new 60 pounder field guns hauled by 8 horses, they arrived in Le Havre on 17 Jun 1916. A month later they were on the Somme at Bouzincourt, they took part in the Battle of Arras in Apr 1917, in September they were moved into position for Paschendale where they were in almost continuous action. Harry’s name appeared in the Hull Daily Mail on 13 Sep 1917 in the War Casualties list as having been wounded.

In Jul 1919 146 (Hull) Heavy Battery RGA arrived back in Hull, they paraded from the docks and Hedon Road into the city where the Lord Mayor took the salute.

Harry returned to Beverley working as a letter press printer, in 1939 he was living with his mother and sister at 252 Grovehill Road, Beverley. In 1954 Harry married widow Thora Hayton (nee Hogarth), living at 250 Grovehill Road until Harry died aged 75 in 1972. He was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 6 Sep 1972.
