David was born in 1898 in Hull, the son of David Thomson and Lily Godfrey. David senior was living and working as a ship riveter in Middlesbrough in 1901, whilst his wife and children were visiting at 1 Marshall's Court, Walker Street, Myton, Hull. By 1911 they were all living in Swinemoor Lane, Beverley. David junior aged 13 was an errand boy, and his father was a riveter.

David was only sixteen when war commenced, he became a drummer attached to the 5th Yorkshire Regiment. His regimental number was 1616. He was awarded the Victory Medal and British Medal, 15 Star, with a qualifying date of 10 Apr 1915. The photograph in the Beverley Guardian indicates that he was wounded.

David died as a result of an accident whilst playing football in Sep 1922 in Beverley, aged 24.
