William Thompson was born in Middleton on the Wolds on 16 Sep 1893 and baptized 26 Nov 1893, the son of John and Annie Thompson (nee Arksey). John was a blacksmith, Annie was from Hutton Cranswick and died in 1904 at the age of 37. In 1911 William was a shepherd on Alfred Overfield's farm in Beswick.
William joined the Army Service Corp and was eventually transferred and became a Driver in the London Regiment. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field along with the 1914 Star and the Victory and British War Medals.
On the 11 Jun 1919 William married Frances Hall at Lockington, they had five sons Eric, Harry, John, Francis and Dennis. In 1939 William and Frances were living at Holme Wold Farm, Middleton on the Wolds where William was a farm foreman.
William died in York in 1992 aged 99.
