Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
John William Thompson was born in Beverley in 1895 the son of James Robert Thompson, a tanner’s labourer born in Bewholme, and Alice Maud (nee Wiles). In 1901 the family lived at Clark’s Place, Wilbert Lane, Beverley, and by 1911 in Greens Passage, Lairgate. John William aged 15 was a labourer at Whiting Works.
John William featured in a report in the Beverley Guardian 28 Aug 1915 which stated: “Driver John William Thompson of the RFA, son of Mr. J. Thompson, Greens Passage, Market Place, Beverley, has been wounded in the knee in the recent fighting and is now in hospital in England. He has been in the Army for two years. The Mayor of Beverley (Mr. Harry Wray) has sent him a letter of sympathy and has received from him a letter in acknowledgement.”
From this report, it would appear that he may have enlisted when he was only 17 years old. His photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian in Jun 1916 with the notation that “he was wounded but is now back in France.” There is no indication whether this was a second injury.
On 10 May 1919 John William Thompson, labourer, married Jane Wilson in St Mary’s Church, Beverley. John William died in 1920.
Beverley Guardian 7 Aug 1920 “Death of John William Thompson at 41 Lairgate, the beloved husband of Jane Thompson, and also the dearly loved son of James and Alice Thompson, aged 25 years.” “His end was peace “.
