Private Thomas James Thomson was born in East Hull in 1896, the son of Tom and Mary Jane Thomson. In 1901 they were living on Alma Street, Hull and his father Tom was a shipwright. By 1911 they had moved to Beverley where his father was a boiler maker. Thomas was employed, aged 15, as a bolt boy.

Thomas joined the 5th Yorkshire Regiment (Territorials ) in 1915. The Regiment was composed of men from Beverley, Driffield, Pocklington, Bridlington, Scarborough and Malton. They joined the 1/4th East Yorkshires to help make up the 50th Northumbrian Division and arrived in France to take up the fight in the Battles of Ypres. Private Thomas Thomson was one of those wounded in the Battle of Ypres. His wounds were such that he was unable to return to the regiment and he was discharged in Oct 1917. He was awarded the 1915 Star, the Victory Medal and the British Empire Medal.

Just before embarking to the front Thomas married Louie Emmery on 6 Mar 1915 at Beverley Minster, they made their home on Wilbert Lane. Thomas died in 1975 in Beverley.
