William was born in Nottingham in 1886the son of William, a baker and confectioner, and Mary Barnes. They moved to Beverley in the late 1890s and were living at 37 Minster Moorgate in 1901, when William junr was working as a grocery boy. By 1911 the family had moved to 84 Minster Moorgate, Beverley and William was working as a railway clerk. William married Gertrude E Hall, in Beverley in 1915.
William joined the Northumberland Fusiliers sometime after 1916 and later served with the Labour Corps. The Service Medal Records & Award Roll document for William show he was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. William's younger brother Charlie, was killed in action on 9 Apr 1917, at the battle of Scarpe.
William returned to Beverley and resumed his career as a railway clerk. In 1939 William and Gertrude were living at 8 Admiral Walker Road, children Kenneth and Joan. William died in 1948, aged 62. Gertrude died in 1960, aged 68.
