Joe was born in 1886, and baptised at St Mary’s Church, Beverley, the son of John Thomas, a wood sawyer, and Eliza Bradley (nee Cattle). They lived Morleys Yard. Joe married Margaret Dalton in 1907 at Beverley St John. Margaret had a young son, William Herbert and he and their 3 children, Alice G, William T and Joseph H were all baptised at St Johns, Beverley. William Thomas died aged 2. The family lived Ladygate and at 64 St Andrews Street before settling at 4 St Andrews Street, Beverley. Joe was a tanners’ labourer with Hodgsons in 1911, he was also a pre-war territorial with the Yorkshire Regiment.

He arrived in France with the 5th Yorkshires in Apr 1915. In Sep 1916 Joe’s photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian with the caption that he was invalided home suffering with trench fever. At the time he left the Army in 1919 he was 33 year old Acting Corporal and was awarded the 1914-1915 Star and the British and Victory medals. He was also awarded a Silver War Badge having been honourably discharged due to sickness.

Joe and his family moved to Hull and by 1939 they were living at 83 12th Avenue, Hull and Joe was working as a mason’s labourer. Margaret died in 1947 and Joe died in 1973 aged 86. His name can be found on the St Andrews Street Shrine, Beverley.
