Harold Binnington was born the 16 Aug 1879 in Beverley and baptised at Beverley Minster on 6 Jul 1884 the son of Edward Binnington,carpenter and Margaret (nee Gleadhill). The family lived in Tindall Lane, off Wednesday Market later moving to 20 Sloe Lane. By 1901 Harold was working as a general labourer, by 1911 he was a tanner’s labourer.

Harold served in the Army with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, the Green Howards. He was a “Beverley Terrier”. Harold arrived in France on 3 Oct 1915. The 5th were involved in actions in Belgium in 1915-16. Harold opted for regular service in the Army in 1916 and he was moved to the 4th Battalion of the Yorkshires and later to the 8th. He left the army on 18 Apr 1919. Harold was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the War and Victory Medals.

Harold continued to work as a labour and by 1939 he was working for the East Riding County Council as a “road worker”. He continued to live at home with his mother. He died at Broadgate Hospital, Walkington, on 29 Sep 1956 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 3 Oct 1956.
