Arthur Wilfred Binnington was born in Beverley the 28 Apr 1886 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 6 Apr 1890 the son of Edward Binnington, carpenter, and Margaret (nee Gleadhill). By 1901 Arthur was working as a messenger boy for the GPO. In 1905 he was promoted to the rank of assistant postman and by 1915 had reached the rank of Beverley postman. On 13 Apr 1915 Arthur married Lily Baker, at Beverley Minster, they lived at 22 Queensgate, Beverley and had a son Arthur born the 20 Dec 1917.
Arthur’s three brothers all served Edward Gleadhill with the RFA, Robert and Harold with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. The Beverley Guardian on 13 Jul 1918 details that Bob had been taken prisoner by the Germans on 27 May 1918 and also noted that “Private A W Binnington has been caught up in fighting and had been gassed”.
Arthur returned to the GPO and became a rural postman in the Beverley area. In 1939 he was living at 43 Queensgate. He died in 1945 at Beverley Base Hospital aged 59 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 31 Jul 1945. His wife Lily died in 1973.
