DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information:

Sid was born in Beverley the 25 Sep 1898 and was baptised on 23 Oct 1898 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, the son of William Winter Baker and Mary Jane (nee Bird), who married in Beverley in 1883. They lived in Keldgate and Sloe Lane before settling at 64 Keldgate.

A photograph of Sid appeared in the Beverley Guardian in Feb 1918 and stated he was currently serving in Mesopotamia as a driver in the Royal Engineers. His Army papers confirm he served in the RE and had been in a RE Territorial force before agreeing to overseas service. As an RE driver Sid may have been involved in the provision of communication links in what was by that time a fairly mobile war with supplies being transported up from Basra on the Persian Gulf. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Sid married Elsie Gray in Beverley in 1923, they had a son Bernard, born 1926. Sid died in Nov 1988, aged 90. Elsie died in 1987.
