John A E Bailey was born in Oct 1889 at Grovehill, Beverley, the son of George Stockdale Bailey and Fanny (nee Simpson). George was from Brough, and Fanny from Aike. In 1898 John was admitted to the Beverley Wesleyan School having previously attended St Nicholas School. He last attended the Wesleyan School on 22 Apr 1903. His mother died in 1903. In 1911 John, aged 19 was living on a farm in Routh, employed as a “lad on farm”.
John’s service record shows that he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers, initially serving with the 4th Battalion and later with the 7th. On 14 Nov 1916 John was declared ‘Missing, presumed dead’. He was buried in the Warlencourt British Cemetery. He was 27 years old and unmarried.
He was awarded the British War and Victory medals and he is commemorated on the Grovehill Road street shrine and Beverley War Memorial, Hengate.
