Robert was the youngest son of James Bruce, a joiner, and his wife, Annie Elizabeth, who lived in St. Andrew Street, Beverley. Robert was born in 1887 and he was educated at Minster Boys’ School. He became a joiner, being employed as a coachbuilder.

Robert's medal index card and medal roll indicate he survived the war, having served in the Motor Transport Division of the Army Service Corps, he was awarded the British War and Victory medals.

His older brother, David William Bruce served as a gunner with the 156th Heavy Artillery Battery and died in France in 1917. Their brother-in-law, William Bell Jessop served with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment was killed in 1918.

In 1912 Robert married Mabel Colcomb, daughter of Edwin Colcomb of Park Road, Hull, a railway gateman for the North Eastern Railway. The 1939 Register shows Robert and Mabel living in Park Road, Hull, with their daughter, Lily Constance. Robert is shown as working as a joiner in a mill, and as a part-time ARP Warden. Robert died in Hull in Mar 1966 at the age of 79.
