Harry Button, the son of Rachel Ann Button, was born in London 17 Feb 1888. In 1901 he and his younger siblings John and Elizabeth were living in Beverley with his mother and stepfather Rachel and Alfred Dove. Prior to his enlistment in the Army he had moved to Leeds where he worked as a carriage cleaner for the NER (North Eastern Railway). He enlisted on 22 Nov 1915 and was posted to the Royal Field Artillery 3/1st West Riding Brigade in 1916, later he was posted to the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was unmarried.

Harry Button was killed in action in France on 9 Apr 1917 aged 27 during the East Yorkshire Regiment’s offensive to capture the Hindenburg Line. He is buried in the Cojeul British Cemetery, Saint-Martin-sur-Cojeul, Department du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. Harry was awarded the British and victory medals. He is remembered on the East Yorkshire Regiment memorial in Beverley Minster and the Hengate memorial at St Mary’s, Beverley
