Corporal Walter John Ball of the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment was the son of Sarah Ann (nee Jenkinson) and Job Ball a tanner's labourer. He was born in Princes Gardens, Well Lane, Beverley in 1893 and had ten siblings. His father died in 1910 and the 1911 Census shows his mother as a widow and a laundress, living on Minster Moorgate with eight children, ranging in age from 2 to 22.

The 1911 Census indicates that Walter John, aged 18, was a single man with the rank of private, living in Aldershot Barracks. He went missing in action in France and Flanders and was presumed dead on 20 Sep 1914. In July 1916 a War Gratuity was authorised of £33.5.11. The sum of £15.2.11 was given to his mother Sarah Ann Ball, a widow, for herself and his brothers, Harold and William and sisters, Lilian and Agnes. His older siblings received £3.0.6 each - George Henry, Francis Herbert, Frederick Redvers, Alice, Annie May and Clara Ellen.
