Fred Burgess was born in Wassand in 1882. His father, John Burgess, a general labourer, later brickyard foreman in Hornsea, was born in Howe Village, Norfolk in 1877 and married Nancy Knaggs of Atwick in 1909. John and Nancy had 5 sons, aswell as Nancy's son Davison Knaggs. In Apr 1909 Fred married Ellen Smith at St Nicholas Church, Beverley. Her father was William Smith of Grove House, Cherry Tree Lane, Beverley.Their daughter Rose was born in 1910. By 1911 the family were living at 240 Wincolmlee, Hull and Fred was a mill labourer at the Oil Mill.

Fred Burgess was a private in the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, No 6278, he went missing after the Battle of Hooge in Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. Fred was declared 'presumed dead' on 9 Aug 1915. His father-in-law advertised in a local Yorkshire newspaper seeking any news of the whereabouts of Fred. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Two of his brothers also enlisted. Arthur was living in Toronto, Canada and his attestation was on the 23 Aug 1915 for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. George Burgess (born 1884) was a Lance Corporal in the 8th Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders was killed in action on the 25 Sep 1915, he left a widow and three daughters, and is remembered on the Loos Memorial, Nord Pas de Calais, France.
