James was born in Beverley Jun 1892. His parents were James and Fanny, James was born 1852 in Beverley and Fannywas born 1857 in County Durham. The 1901 census indicates James senior was a boot/shoemaker. James' siblings were William born 1883, who was working as a waterman on barges, Harry born 1889, Walter born 1891 and Frederick born 1899.They lived at 28 Beckside, Beverley. A sister Clara Verity b 1878 also lived in Beverley. By 1911 James was working as 4th lad with horses on a farm at Kiplin House, Middleton on the Wolds. His employer was George English.
James enlisted in the army on 20 Jan 1916 joining the 8th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment, and was transferred to the 12th Battalion on 21 May 1916. On 10 Jun he was with his regiment at Etaples, France. On 8 Aug 1916 James was wounded in the abdomen and died the next day while in the care of 95th Field Ambulance. Private James Bugg 21555 is buried at St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richbourg - L"Avoue near Bethune, France. His death was reported in the Beverley Guardian 26 Aug 1916 and he is remembered on the Beckside Street Shrine, the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Beverley District Roll of Honour, the East Yorkshire Regiment Memorial in Beverley Minster and the Beverley Memorial in Hengate.
