Stanley Buck was born in 1896 in Beverley one of five sons born to William and Mary Buck, and one of three who served, along with Harold and Stanley. Arthur was christened at Beverley Minster. William and Mary Buck were both born in Norfolk, and moved to Beverley in about 1885, William was employed as a tanners' labourer. Arthur was a printer employed by the Beverley Guardian newspaper.
Stanley and his older brother Arthur enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment together and their Regimental numbers were consecutive. Sometime later their younger brother, Harold, also enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment.Arthur was killed in Sep 1916, Harold was a prisoner of war, survived and returned home to Beverley after the Armistice.
Stanley was reported as wounded in the Beverley Guardian 29 May 1915, but no details were given. He was serving with the 5th Battalion who were engaged at Ypres. Information taken from details of Stanley's entitlement to the Victory and War Medals indicates that he also served with the 4th Battalion and the 8th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment but no specific dates are given for either. Stanley survived the war and was eventually discharged from the Regiment on 18 Mar 1919.
