Ralph Bryon, the son of Hodgson Bryon and his wife Selina Dale, was born at Heighholme in the parish of Leven, he was baptised on 21 Jun 1887. Ralph's father was a shepherd from Kilham and his mother came from Driffield. He had a brother, James William Bryon, born in Driffield and sister, Selina Bryon, born at Wawne. Hodgson Bryon died aged 46 in 1900 and his widow moved with her family to Beverley. Ralph was employed as a glue boiler at Richard Hodgson and Sons Limited. He married Lucy Dennis on 14 Feb 1914 at St Nicholas' Church, Beverley. They lived at 54 St Andrews Street and later moved to 9 Denton Street. Ralph and Lucy had two daughters, Lucy Elma born 4 Aug 1914 and Selina Alice Bryon born 20 Jun 1916.

Ralph Bryon enlisted on 10 Dec 1915 and was mobilised on 27 May 1916. He arrived in France on 12 Jul 1916 and was posted to 'A' Company, 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (30th Division) on 6 Sep 1916. On 18 Oct 1916, in the Battle of Transloy Ridge (Somme), Ralph was posted as missing. His grieving wife Lucy appealed for any news of him in the Beverley Guardian and it was not until 4 Feb 1918 the War Office officially declared him dead. His body, which was found near Bapaume, was exhumed and reburied in the British Cemetery, Warlencourt, Pas de Calais.

Lucy remarried widower, and former Yorkshire Regiment soldier, Robert Coneyworth at Beverley Minster on 27 Dec 1920. Robert died in 1931 aged 46 and Lucy died in 1947 aged 59.
