George William Bryon was born on 14 Apr 1897, as George William Watson Vincent, the son of Maggie Vincent. His mother, Maggie, married James William Bryon on Christmas Day 1900, and her son later assumed the surname of his stepfather.

George was a member of the Territorial Force serving with the 1st/5th Yorkshire Regiment. His regimental number 1318, indicates that he was already serving before the outbreak of war and his medal card shows that he disembarked in France on 18 Apr 1915. Details of George's service have been taken from newspaper entries in the Beverley Guardian. On 14 Sep 1916, he was reported as being wounded in the knee and in hospital in France. After being gassed in Jul 1917, Lance Corporal Bryon received treatment in hospital in France. He was wounded for the third time, on Passchendaele Ridge on 10 Nov 1917 and was repatriated to the 3rd Western General Hospital in Newport, Monmouthshire. He was wounded for the fourth time during the German Offensive of Mar-Apr 1918 and sent to Barnet War Hospital, High Barnet, Hertfordshire.

Lance Corporal Bryon was a machine-gunner in the Lewis Gun Section of the 5th Yorkshires. He also saw service with the 2nd Yorkshires. George served alongside his step-father, who survived, in the 5th Battalion. Following his discharge from the Army, George married Sarah Jane Pooley on 7 Jun 1919 at St James Church, Sutton-on-Hull. They had a daughter Joyce born 1921. At the time of the 1939 Register the family lived at 54 Church Street, Sutton-on-Hull, George gives his occupation as a chauffeur. George died in 1965 in Hull. His widow, Sarah Jane, died in 1966.
