Arthur Boyes was born 12 Apr 1897 in Beverley, the son of Alfred and Phoebe Boyes, nee Johnson and was the youngest of eight children. The family lived in Cherry Tree Lane, Beverley. His father Alfred, who died in 1897, was the secretary of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows and his funeral was attended by members of every lodge in the district. Arthur was educated at Beverley Wesleyan School and in 1911 was a stationer’s errand boy. He was a member of the church lad’s brigade.
Arthur enlisted with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire regiment 4 Aug 1914. According to the Hull Daily Mail 30 Jul 1917, he took part in the second Battle of Ypres and in the capture of St Julien. He was wounded twice and was invalided home for some time. Arthur was killed in action 20 Jul 1917 in Belgium. He is buried at Larch Wood (railway Cutting) cemetery.
