William Henry Baker was born on 16 April 1892 in Molescroft Carr near Beverley. His father Henry was born in Woodmansey, and his mother Clara was born in Kilham. They married in 1883. Henry was a carter by trade. William was baptised in Beverley St John on 5 Jun 1892.
By 1901 the family had moved to Middleton on the Wolds. William now had a brother Ernest born in 1899 and a sister Janet born in 1901. Another brother Arthur died in 1899 at one month old. By 1911 were living at 29 Wood Lane in Beverley. William was eighteen and assisted his father in the family business. William enlisted in the Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport) in Nov 1915. His regimental number was 59442, he served in the Welsh Regiment, 9th Battalion in the Western European Theatre. William died of wounds in the Fench hospital Chichey on 8 Jun 1918 and was buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery in Wimille, Department du Pas-de-Calais, France. He was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
