Tom was born in Hull on 22 Nov 1887, one of six sons of John Thomas and Mary Artis Boddy. His father was a chronometer maker for the Wilson Line Steamers and his two older brothers were also watchmakers.
Tom joined the army in Jul 1905 and served in India from 1907 to 1913, he became a member of the Special Reserve and lived in Hornsea. He went to the Western Front in Sep 1914 as a private in the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 13 Oct 1914 during the Battle of the Aisne while helping in the rescue of a wounded colleague. He was awarded posthumously the British War Medal and 14 Star. Tom has no known grave but is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium.
