Hubert Binnington was born 28 Dec 1893 in Hull, son of John and Fanny Binnington, the family was originally from Woodmansey and Hubert was one of six children, only three of whom survived their early years. His uncles Edward and Thomas were respectively the verger and assistant verger of St Mary’s church in Beverley.

In 1911 Hubert was a servant, along with his sister Beatrice at Pickwell Rectory, Oakham, Leicester. Hubert enlisted in the Coldstream Guard on 29 Oct 1914 and saw active service in France. He was discharged on 27 Aug 1918 having suffered a gunshot wound. He received the Silver badge.
He was awarded the 1915 Star, the British War medal and the Victory Medal.

In 1926 Hubert married Eva Kingsbury in Southampton. In 1939 he was living in Portsmouth working as a journeyman shoemaker. He died in Portsmouth in 1978 aged 83.
