Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
George was born in 1876 to Sarah Jane Beaumont. Sarah Jane does not appear on the 1891 census but George, supposedly age 11 and sister Annie 3 years his senior, are recorded as paupers in the Union Workhouse. George married Eva Annie Forth in Beverley Minster in 1904 giving his occupation as labourer and address as Flemingate. In 1911 the family were living in South Cave and he was a beastman/milkman. When George joined the army, he was back in Beverley in Well Gardens, Well Lane.
Private 16931 George T Beaumont enlisted with 1st East Yorkshire Regiment on 8 Feb 1915 at the age of 37 years 7 months. In May 1916 George was on his way to France with the British Expeditionary Force. The 1st East Riding Regiment, as part of the 64th Brigade, was on the front line of the Somme Battle of Albert in Jul 1916. Two months later George was near to Flers and again on the front line. George was initially reported as missing and his photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian in Nov 1916 with a “Missing” caption. On the Local Roll of Honour in the Beverley Guardian on 24 Mar 1917 his photograph appeared again, this time stating “previously reported missing, is now reported killed”. George died on 26 Sep 1916 according to his Army Service Record but he has no known grave. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme and his name can be found on the Beverley War Memorial in Hengate and on the East Yorkshire Regiment’s memorial in Beverley Minster
