John was born on 7 Feb 1888 in Beverley to Abraham and Eliza Harriet Batty (nee Brown). Abraham was a groom and by 1911 they had 7 children including Frances Eleanor, Sarah Ann, Thomas Herbert and Daisy Elizabeth. Two other children died prior to the 1911 census.

John joined the Royal Field Artillery in 1909, giving his occupation was a groom. In 1911 he was based at barracks in Heavitree, Devon as a driver for the 56th Battery RFA. In 1916 he was wounded but returned to service. He was awarded the 1914 War, the British War and the Victory medals and the South Africa campaign medal. John finished his service as a gunner in Feb 1921. Six months later he married Edith Hare (nee Grantham) widow from Bean Street, Hull at St Barnabas Church, Hull.

John and Edith one child, Minnie in 1923, she married Joseph Whitfield in 1946. Minnie and her husband were living with her parents in the 1939 Register. John died in Hull in 1974 aged 94.
