George Barley was born in Beverley the 19 Oct 1892 and baptised 2 Nov 1892 at Beverley, St Nicholas. He was son of Emma Barley who died in 1892 and had three siblings John, Maud and Arthur, they lived with their grandparents John and Mary Barley.
George was an apprentice caulker at Beverley shipyard, he enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery, 2nd Northumberland Brigade on 31 May 1915, as a gunner. He served in France and was wounded on 3 Apr 1917 and due to the wounds his leg was amputated. He was discharged with a disability pension on 10 Sep 1918. George was awarded the 14-15 Star, the British War medal and the Victory Medal. He was also granted the Silver War badge.
In 1939 George was living at Denton Street, Beverley with his brother John. He was employed as a general labourer and watchman. He died on 20 Nov 1959 in Northfield Sanatorium, Driffield aged 67.
