Charles Bowser was born in Beverley the 19 Jul 1890 and baptised at St Mary’s Church the 20 Aug 1890, the son of George Bowser, a gardener, and Charlotte. Charles was brought up in Bethlehem Place, Walkergate, on Newbegin and 17 Grayburn Lane. He became a tanner’s labourer.Charles married Harriet Ellen Fox at Beverley Minster on 14 Jul 1912. They lived on Chantry Lane, they had seven children.
Charles served in the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, he was transferred to the 9th Battalion of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI). On 24 Aug 1918 Charles was seriously wounded in action in France, according to the Beverley Guardian of 14 Sep 1918 he received a bad shrapnel wound to his left shoulder, sufficiently serious for Charles to be repatriated to the UK, to West Didsbury Medical Hospital, Manchester. He was discharged from the Army on 21 Feb 1919 and was awarded the War and Victory medals.
Charles returned to Beverley, after 1922 his family moved to Grimsby where he worked as a painter. He died in Grimsby aged 84 in 1975. Harriett died in 1979.
