Thomas Edward Sharp (known as Edward Sharp) was born in Beverley the 9 May 1898 and baptised on 28 May 1898 at Beverley Minster, the son of Thomas Sharp and Mary Milner (nee Waite). Thomas, senior was from Leven and Mary was from Leconfield. Thomas senior worked as a farm labourer, moving to Beverley he was a rulleyman, a labourer and then a maltster’s labourer. Thomas and Mary married in 1891, Thomas was previously married to Jane Waite, of Leconfield, Jane died on 20 Jul 1886. Thomas and Jane had had two children, one Edward’s half-brother William Herbert Sharp, served in the Army Service Corps. Edward’s mother, Mary, died in 1906. The family lived at 11 Sawney’s Lane, later renamed George Street.

Thomas Edward served in the Royal Army Service Corps, involved with motor transport. His photograph appeared in the Beverley Guardian of 20 Jun 1917 with the information that Edward had been repatriated to the UK, to hospital in Leeds, with appendicitis. He served in France for “2 years and 10 months” indicating he joined up early in the war and had been underage when he did so. He didn’t receive a Silver Badge so probably returned to frontline duties. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Edward worked as a builder’s labourer, in 1925 he was living at 14 Waltham Terrace, Beverley; by 1939 he was at 4 Norwood Dale. Edward died aged 60 in 1958.
