George William was born in Beverley in 1893 the third of six sons of William Scoffin, a joiner in Beverley and Betsy. He attended Minster Boys' School up to the age of 14. In 1908 The Beverley Recorder and General Advertiser newspaper, mentions that along with his brother Frank, he had passed Pitman's (Shorthand) Elementary exam while attending Spencer School evening classes. In 1911 aged 18 he was employed as a Clerk in a Solicitor's Office.
George enlisted in May 1915 in the Coldstream Guards and embarked for France on 21 Dec 1915. He was in action in the Somme offensive and was wounded on 15 Sep 1916, he was admitted to hospital in Rouen but later rejoined his Battalion in the field, where he continued to serve until he returned to England in Apr 1919. He was demobilised and transferred to the 'Z' Army Reserve in Jun 1919. George was awarded the British, Victory and 15 Star Medals.
His brothers Walter was killed in Mar 1918, but brothers Harry and Frank both survived.
The announcement of George's death was published in the Beverley Guardian 21 Mar 1934, he was 40 years old.
