Harold Sanders was born in Beverley the 19 Jan 1895 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 15 Feb 1895, the son of George Sanders and his wife Julia. George was from Claxton, Cambridgeshire and Julia was from Glasgow. Julia was a widow when they married and Harold had two half siblings. Harold’s father was a tanner’s labourer but had previously been a railway signalman in London. The family lived in Flemingate and later in Lurk Lane and at 28 Minstermoorgate. After leaving school he worked as an errand boy in a grocery shop.

Harold served in the East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry, having agreed to serve abroad he went with the Yeomanry to Egypt on the 10 Nov 1915. He left the army on 26 Mar 1919. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

Harold became the manager of a grocery shop in Beverley. In 1939 he was an “assistant manager”. On 18 Sep 1926 he married Elsie Willey of Swinemoor Lane,at St Nicholas’ Church, Beverley. The couple lived at 6 Minstermoorgate and later at 195 Holme Church Lane, Beverley. Their only child, Sheila, was born in 1929. The couple moved to the Manchester area where Harold died aged 88, in 1983; Emily died in Oldham in 1993.
