John Simpson was born in Hornsea the 4 Jun 1878; he then lived outside the area before moving to Beverley around 1903. John was the son of William Simpson, from Long Riston, and his wife Margaret Louisa Camaish, from the Isle of Man. The family lived on Ocean Terrace, Hornsea in 1881, before moving to the Isle of Man, then Workington, Cumberland. John became a house painter, following in his fathers footsteps. By 1901 the family had moved to Wheeler Street, Hull.

John married Mary Jane Jackson, from Hornsea, in 1900, Their children were, John Edwin born 1901 in Hull, Cyril born 1902 in Seaton, William Harrold born 1903 in Beverley, Edith born 1905in Beverley and Mona born 1908 in Beverley. They were living at Well Gardens in 1911 and 16 Keldgate by 1914. John’s parents and siblings also moved to Beverley and were living at 7 Princes Gardens, Well Lane in 1911.

John initially joined the Royal Engineers as a sapper but at some point was transferred to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment as a private. John was transferred to the 24th Company of the Labour Corps. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.

John continued as a painter and wallpaper hanger and is recorded in 1939 living at 17 Admiral Walker Road, Beverley. He died in Apr 1959 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 27 Apr 1959. John is remembered on the Keldgate Street Shrine.
