Fred Sanderson was born in Routh in 1892, the youngest son and second youngest of John and Emily (nee Aylett) Sanderson's ten children.

In 1911 Fred was a farm labourer and living in Tickton with his parents and siblings but, by 1916, he was living in Western Australia where, on 23 Mar 1916, he enlisted as part of Australia's Expeditionary Force, at Blackboy Hill in 62 Depot as Private 6581. He was 24 years old at the time and employed as a farm hand.

In December 1916 Fred was treated in hospital for influenza, but by the following February was in France. Fred was taken prisoner on 15 Apr 1917 at Boursies. He was reported missing the next day and a short while later his capture was confirmed. He was held prisoner in Limburg, Germany. Fred was repatriated to England on 19 Dec 1918 and discharged from the army on 31 Jul 1919. He returned to Australia where, according to electoral registers, he lived in Pingelly, Western Australia, until at least 1943.

Fred was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.
