Harry Salter was born in Beverley the 16 May 1892, the son of George Salter and Emma Jane, who married in Hull in 1882. The family lived in Brigham’s Yard, off Wednesday Market. Harry spent some time living with his uncle George Roe. Harry worked at the Beverley shipyard of Cook, Gemmell and Welton as a labourer.
Harry joined the Territorial Army in 1911, he attended their annual camps. Harry married Ruby Irene Fitt on the 10 Sep 1914 at St Michael’s Church, Skidby and he was described as a soldier. They lived with Harry’s parents at 18 Princes Gardens, Beverley.
As a territorial Harry had to give his consent to serve abroad; and he did so, arriving in France on 18 Apr 1915. Harry was sent to Belgium and the 5th were plunged into the Second Battle of Ypres at St Julien. He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on 17 Sep 17th 1915. After a year’s frontline service Harry invoked his right to be discharged and duly left the army on 8 Apr 1916 and returned home. Harry was awarded the War and Victory Medals as well as the 1914-15 Star.
On 18 Nov 1918 Harry’s wife died, Harry was resident at 18 Prince’s Gardens in 1925. A “Harry Salter”, aged 36, died in Bury, Lancashire in 1928.
