Arthur Stephenson was born in Beverley the 18 May 1893, the son of William Stephenson and Ada Medd, who married in 1889. William was a bricklayer and builder. The family home was 24 Cherry Tree Lane, previously the family had lived in Trinity Grove and at 24 Regent Street, Beverley. Arthur attended the Beverley Wesleyan School, Spencer Street from 1899 until Jul 1907. He is recorded in the 1911 census as a shop assistant at a local clothier.
Arthur’s photograh, in uniform, appeared with his two brothers in the Beverley Guardian in Jan 1918 stating he was a private in the 5th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment (the Beverley Territorials). However he does not appear in the regimental medal rolls, suggesting he may not have served overseas.
Arthur established a ladies outfitters shop at 793 Hessle Road, Hull and in the 1939 register is described as a “clothing, hosiery, boots and shoes dealer”. In 1923 he married Minnie Nichols in Hull, they had two children, Donald A born 23 Dec1924 and Gordon E born 4 Mar 1934. Donald would become a hosier like his father.
Arthur died on 31 Dec 1950 aged 57, Minnie remarried in 1958 in Hull. She died in 1984.
