Alfred Spence was born at Weel the 8 Jan 1893 and baptised at Beverley Minster the 12 Feb 1893. His parents were Walter Legay and Anne Elizabeth Spence. Walter was originally from Molescroft and a cabinetmaker but by the time of the 1911 census was working as a cowkeeper and dairyman. At the end of the 1890s the family moved to Grovehill Road from Weel. Alfred had three sisters. Before the war Alfred was an apprentice cabinetmaker.

Alfred joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, 164th Siege Battery which arrived in France on 4 Sep 1916. He served as gunner no: 165935. He received the War and Victory Medals.

Alfred worked as a joiner/carpenter and in the early 1920s was a member of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, joiners and Cabinetmakers. On 31 Mar 1923 he married Cissie Hill at St Nicholas’ Church, Beverley. They had a daughter, Eileen, born the 15 Jul 1926. The family home was at 119 Grovehill Road, Beverley. Alfred died in 1961 aged 68. Cissie died in 1977.
