Harold Spivey was born in Beverley the 23 Dec 1896 the son of John Henry Spivey, from Hull, and Rose Emily Harrison Loft, of Beverley, they married in 1893. Harold had five siblings and the family was living in Duncum’s Yard, Walkergate in 1901 and at 4 Well Place, Beverley in 1911. Later moving to Alfred Street, Hessle Road, Hull where they were still living in 1939. Harold was a “chain lad” on the railway before he enlisted.
Harold joined the infantry serving as a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers, probably enlisting in 1915. On the 27 Apr 1916 he joined the Royal Flying Corps which later became the RAF. He served on the Western Front and was hospitalised twice: in early Jun 1917 for eight days with influenza and then on 18 and 19 Oct 1917 with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was discharged from the RAF on 9 Feb 1919 and was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
Harold moved to Coventry and worked on the LMS railway as a “passenger shunter”. In early 1919, he married Ellen Cleaver they had two children, Harold E born 1919 and Iris W born 1930. Harold spent the rest of his life in Coventry and died there in 1980.
