Sydney was born in 1892 at Little Cressingham, Norfolk, one of fourteen children of Henry and Elizabeth Sample. In 1911 at the age of 18 he was living with his parents in Little Cressingham and was employed as a farm labourer. Three of his sisters were working in the Beverley/Hull area and their parents, Sydney and another brother, Arthur, moved to live in Beverley.
Sydney served as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He embarked for France in Apr 1915, and he survived the conflict and was awarded the British War and Victory medals and the 15 Star.
The 1939 Register shows Sydney employed as a farm labourer, living in Patrington. In 1946 he married Lilian Ethel Hunt. They lived at 18 Mill Lane where Sydney died on 5 Dec 1962. Lilian Ethel died in 1980 aged 77.
