John Robert Sowersby was born the 17 Sep 1892 the son of John William Sowersby and Edith (nee Carr), he was baptised in Beverley Minster the 7 Oct 1892. In 1901 he was living with his maternal grandmother in Minster Yard, Beverley.
In 1909 he enlisted on 7 Jul with the Royal Field Artillery at Hull, aged 18. He served in France and Belgium from Aug 1914 to Nov 1915 and in Salonika from Nov 1915 to Mar 1919 gaining promotion to Corporal. John was wounded twice and was awarded the Victory Medal and the British medal. On 8 Jun 1919 John was transferred to the Reserve section, having completed 12 years with the colours, with exemplary military character.
John married Sarah Chambers in 1926 in Hull, they had 2 children. In 1939 John was living in Hull working as a dock labourer. He died in 1983 aged 90.
